11/25/2009 6:00:00 AM Forbes: Epic is 'hottest' in field
That little company that's transforming Verona's west side continues to get national attention - even if it doesn't want it.
An article last month on Forbes.com said "a secretive Wisconsin outfit called Epic Systems" is the "hottest company" in the nationwide push to install electronic versions of patient medical records at hospitals and clinics.
The article said Epic is beating out big-name companies like General Electric, Siemens and McKesson in a booming industry.
"Epic has recently been winning about 40 percent of the new contracts for electronic records systems at major hospitals - far ahead of its competitors," the article said.
Forbes also reported that Epic won 24 "big-hospital contracts" in 2008 compared with 12 for McKesson and 10 for Siemens.
The article implies that Epic's in the driver's seat as doctors and hospitals line up for $36 billion in federal incentives to install electronic patient records.
It also details Epic's aversion to publicity, noting that it "does little marketing or advertising, shuns acquisitions, never issues press releases and tries to stay out of the headlines."
